San Gimignano

San Gimignano is one of the best conserved medieval villages of Tuscany and known for its 13 towers dominating the village. These towers have been constructed in the middle ages by competing wealthy families and were used as house and fortress, but were first of all a sign of wealth and power.

In the glorious period San Gimignano had about 70 towers. The surroundings of San Gimignano is hilly, green and has lots of vineyards. This is were the famous white wine called Vernaccia is produced.
